September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time when we come together to raise awareness, break the silence, and equip ourselves with the tools to save lives. At What Makes You Feel Beautiful (WMYFB), we are deeply committed to providing resources and support to our community. With four of our core staff and volunteers certified in Youth and Adult Mental Health First Aid, we are proud to offer guidance and support to those in need.
The Reality of Suicide in Our Communities
The statistics are both sobering and heartbreaking. In 2022, nearly 49,476 people in the United States died by suicide—an average of one person every 11 minutes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Suicide is the second leading cause of death among people aged 10-14 and the 12th leading cause of death overall in the U.S. Even more staggering, for every death by suicide, the CDC estimates that 275 people seriously entertained thoughts of ending their life.
These statistics are a call to action for each of us to become part of the solution. Whether you're a mom, a caregiver, or a young person struggling with mental health, know that help is available. If you or someone you know is in crisis, you can call or text 988 for 24/7 access to trained crisis counselors.
How You Can Support Someone in Crisis
Suicidal thoughts do not have to become reality. While you may not be a mental health professional, you can still play a crucial role in supporting someone going through a difficult time. By being attentive, compassionate, and informed, you can help guide them toward the resources they need. Here are some simple ways to support yourself or others:
Tips for Moms and Caregivers:
Start the Conversation: It’s important to let your child or loved one know that you’re there for them. Ask gentle questions like, “How have you been feeling lately?” or “Is there something you want to talk about?”
Be Aware of Changes: Look out for signs such as withdrawal from activities, drastic mood changes, or expressions of sadness and hopelessness. These may be indicators that your loved one needs extra support.
Model Healthy Habits: Show your child or loved one that taking care of mental health is important. Engage in positive activities together, like spending time outdoors, practicing mindfulness, or creating a daily routine that includes moments of self-care.
Know When to Get Help: It’s okay to seek outside help. Reach out to a professional or utilize available resources like the 988 crisis lifeline if someone you care about is in immediate distress.
Tips for Youth, Young Adults, and Young Moms:
Don’t Be Afraid to Speak Up: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s okay to talk to someone. Whether it’s a parent, a friend, or a trusted adult, sharing your feelings can be the first step in feeling better.
Take Care of Yourself: Remember that your mental health matters. Take small steps to care for yourself, like spending time doing activities you enjoy, getting fresh air, or journaling about how you feel.
Stay Connected: Don’t isolate yourself. Sometimes, being around others can make a huge difference. Spend time with friends or family who support and uplift you.
Be Aware of Your Friends: If a friend or loved one is showing signs of distress or talks about feeling hopeless, listen to them and encourage them to talk to an adult or reach out to a crisis lifeline for help.
