What Makes You Feel Beautiful?

By Honoring and Showcasing female entrepreneurs on Maui March 2019

Women entrepreneurs are intuitive, smart, risk takers and steadily increasing. Sarah Breedlove, better known as Madam C. J. Walker was the first female entrepreneur (Dec 23,1867-May 25,1919). Although married at the age of fourteen in 1882 (possibly to escape abuse), she still somehow managed to be considered the wealthiest African-American businesswomen, and wealthiest self-made businesswoman in America, of her time.

Sarah Breedlove, one of six siblings, was the first child in her family born into freedom after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. She was orphaned at seven years old after her parents both died a year apart from each other. By the time Sarah was just ten years old she was a domestic worker. She had 3 months of education which came from earlier years attending Sunday School.

Little Sarah made a name for herself by becoming Madam C. J. Walker, one of the world's most admired business woman in history. She developed and marketed a line of cosmetics and hair care products for black women. {learn more}
